Was mentioned above that Bob Weir played slide with the GD. That may be a bit generous. He spent much of the mid eighties trying to learn to play the slide and practiced during shows. Was often hard on the ears.

Stick with Lowell George.

Chuckle, listening to someone learn slide is like listening to someone learn the violin. But there are interesting moments of contrast in some GD shows of the era, where you hear Garcia musically saying, "Let me show you how it's done, son."

I think there was a semi-famous quote of Garcia's where someone was interviewing him, saying something like - "I see Bob's been practicing slide lately" and Garcia saying "Yes.. I just wish he wouldn't practice while we're on stage."

Lowell George. Download a copy of Little Feat 2-14-76 at Winterland in San Franciso. Listen to the slide solo out of Cold Cold Cold...best 2 minutes of music EVER. Lowell was the shiat.
